Mentor vs tutorAnswered in writingPick a time →

✦ Why a mentor

Ask us the hard questions.
We’ve answered them below.

Why don’t we rely on the MOE credentials? How do we justify the premium? What if my child isn’t actually failing, but just lacks confidence? We answer them in writing, before you ever book a consultation.

The short version: Same syllabus, entirely different approach. The long version takes five minutes below.

“What if my child is actually fine? Am I overreacting?”

If it's only about marks, a standard centre is fine.

If your child is confident and just needs a B pushed to an A, traditional tuition works (and costs less). We will honestly tell you that on a call. But three things change the equation:

  • The needle isn’t moving: A year of standard tuition hasn’t worked. More mock papers won’t fix it.
  • The marks are fine, but the child isn’t: They show you the distinction, then apologise for the three marks lost.
  • They’ve decided who they are: “I’m just not a maths person.” They still finish the worksheets, but they say it more firmly each week.

If you’re here for the mindset, not just the marks: you aren’t overreacting. You are early.

“What actually changes from week to week?”

We teach the same subject, but we do a completely different job.

A good private 1:1 tutor can offer several rows too. The difference is which are standard practice, written where you can check them.

“Are your mentors actually MOE-trained?”

Mostly, no. That is the hiring policy, not a gap in it.

A teaching certificate certifies a real craft: one syllabus, forty children, consistently. We abolished the forty. A class of one is a different job, so we hire for a different thing: whether a child who has gone quiet will open up to the person across the table. Top of their field first, then an interview built around the one question a CV cannot answer.

“Then who taught them my child's syllabus?”

Veteran MOE and IB teachers did.

Our mentors train through Stamford Classroom: teacher training whose instructors are career MOE and IB teachers, ten or more years of classroom experience each. Every mentor teaches the MOE, IB and IGCSE syllabi, the same papers your child sits.

“Why would I pay more than a centre, or an MOE teacher privately?”

Because your child is never just a name on a roster.

A centre can be excellent and still be a system: one teacher, many children, the hour ends, the next class files in. Ours is built to a different standard. The same mentor owns the thread from one week to the next: noticing what changed, writing the debrief, adapting the next hour. You are paying for continuity, attention and accountability that a group model is not built to provide, and we’d rather explain the price than disguise the product.

Which is why you will not hear “it depends” from us. An hour is S$80 to S$180, set by level, mentor and package size; a secondary-school hour, at the individual rate, is S$110. H2 and HL Math add S$10. Every rate is here, and the consultation is free at every rate on the table.

One Tuesday, two rooms

Imagine the same Tuesday, in two rooms

In the first room

A group class; the worksheet everyone gets. She answers nothing, because being wrong in front of the room is worse than silence. Her teacher is good, and has a room to run. She stopped asking questions in March, and the model has no place to record it.

Now put her in a room built for one

Nobody to be wrong in front of. When “I don’t know” is doing the work of “I don’t want to be wrong”, the hour can stop and go to what is underneath. Next Tuesday can begin exactly there, because one person remembers, and wrote it down.

From our co-founder

Great mentors changed the course of my life. They saw more in me than a set of marks, and believed in me before I did. Scholars Hall exists to pass that gift on: one mentor who knows your child, notices the quiet changes, and believes in them even on the days they don’t believe in themselves. We don’t just teach the syllabus; we mentor the individual.
Jerry Goh · Co-Founder, Scholars Hall

Confidence isn’t a side benefit here. It is why we exist, and the reason the class size is one.

“Care is easy to claim. What makes yours checkable?”

Don't weigh our claims. Weigh our refusals.

We don’t hire anyone your child wouldn’t open up to

Top of their field AND able to reach a child. Both, or no offer.

We don’t teach groups

Not even as a premium tier. The second chair does not exist.

We don’t sell hours a child doesn’t need

If the consultation says six weeks, we say six weeks. It is the easiest place to take advantage of a worried parent.

We don’t rotate mentors

The same mentor every week. Changing them is your call, never our roster’s.

“And what if it doesn't work out?”

The door doesn't lock.

  • The consultation is with the mentor you chose. Forty-five minutes, online, free.
  • You’ll get our honest read, with no obligation at the end.
  • Debriefs, hours used, what changed: in your own portal, not a WhatsApp thread.
  • Change mentor, or stop entirely, from the portal. No difficult phone call.
